HP Pavilion DV6870US 15.4" Laptop

HP Pavilion DV6870US 15.4" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-64 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)
HP Pavilion dv6000 Entertainment Notebook PC combines mobility, power and entertainment in a new design. Featuring an HP Imprint finish, the dv6000's subtle "wave" pattern was influenced by Zen rock gardens and compliments the stylish, curvilinear design. High-gloss piano black on the outside with polished silver on the inside, HP's resin finish is more durable than standard options. The dv6000 design is further enhanced by back-lit, touch-sensitive media controls that are activated by a touch or tap of a finger.

Customer Review: VERY VERY decent laptop

I purchased this product as a desktop replacement. I've had it for a few weeks now and it is great. It actually came with more than I expected. Great wide screen, mic, webcam, quick-key buttons for quick play, mouse pad disable option, all of the jacks and ports you need, quick on/off switch for wireless network card, decent speakers, dedicated cards, and more.
The only things that have been poor thus far is that my disk player would open itself randomly (it has been a little while since it last did that), and when installed Windows Live Messenger it began to restart itself as windows kept saying it was in a critical state every time it booted up. Thank heavens for safe mode and restart points! A bit of bloatware but there is no problem with uninstalling.
Overall, I highly recommend this well-rounded laptop to everyone in search of something perfect for the price.

Customer Review: This baby is HOT HOT HOT!!

No joke. I bought one of these and sent it back because it got so unbearably hot I couldn't bear to hold it. Instead I bought the newer model tx2510us, which has the newer AMD Puma processor and ATI graphics. It does get warm, but not scorching like the tx2120us. I think the ATI graphics are an improvement as well. If you are interested in a low cost tablet, I would steer clear of the tx2120us and consider the tx2510us instead.

Customer Review: Not a good experience

I received my laptop ac adapter and it promptly broke within 2 weeks of owning it. I returned it, paid the shipping charges, and my power cord sat there for over 2 weeks before a replacement was sent back. I sent numerous emails inquiring about the status of my cord but they all failed to acknowledge the nature of my inquiry. I would write inquisitive emails expressing my frustration and they would write back "Thanks for the update!". It was an extremely frustrating experience as I was unable to turn my computer on for some time. I will never work with this company again!

HP 2133 KX869AT#ABA 8.9-Inch Mini-Note Laptop

HP 2133 KX869AT#ABA 8.9-Inch Mini-Note Laptop (1.2 GHz VIA C7-M Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10)
It might be small in size but it's big on usability, durability, and attractiveness. Packed with an impressive combination of features, the HP 2133 offers you a full-function PC with the utmost mobility. Plus, its simple, refined design and all-aluminum case make it sleek and sturdy yet super lightweight.Weighing in at just 1.27 kg, with a large 8.9-inch WXGA display, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC features a durable design with a robust suite of wireless, multimedia and security capabilities to allow users to stay productive.

Customer Review: Nearly perfect (for its intended purpose)

Firstly, this review is being written on the 1.6Ghz, HP2133 Mini Note with 2Gb RAM and Vista Home Basic (which was installed at the factory). I have also read the myriad comments in the other reviews about poor CPU performance and warm operation. Therefore, I'll avoid similar statements, only to say that I have also noticed these issues under certain circumstances.

Nevertheless, I have turned off most of the useless bells and whistles in Vista and customised the OS to work adequately for the tasks I perform. And what I do isn't necessarily trivial. I have Office 2007 installed and it works fine to write university assignments and work reports, etc. Word, with the screen set to "page width" view is readable and as functional as my desktop. I also installed Adobe CS3. Yes, it can be slow at times, but it performs well enough to get the job done (using InDesign, Photoshop and occasionally, Dreamweaver). However, I understood when I bought the Mini Note, that it was not designed for multimedia production, but more for multimedia presentation and for basic computing. It is NOT a desktop replacement and was never intended to be.

The more I use my 2133, the more I love it. That doesn't mean I haven't noticed some negative issues (other than those highlighted in other reviews). I'll outline these below.

I won't comment on the touchpad, because I rarely use it. Most of the time, I use the Mini Note on a desk or on my briefcase (placed on my lap), so I plug in a laptop mouse. I would do this with ANY laptop or notebook. However, the Mini Note does allow for more space to use a mouse than a conventional laptop. Once I have finished using the Mini Note, it fits in my briefcase with all my other stuff.

Talking of placing the Mini Note in a briefcase; I am astonished that there isn't a case or bag for it. Most laptop bags are too big and would defeat the purpose of buying the Mini Note. As a result, I use a cloth bag I got with a mixer tap (faucet) I bought for a renovation. It is the perfect size to protect against scratches and marks. This is not to say the nice brushed aluminium (aluminum) case is susceptible to scratches; it's not, I just like to protect my equipment.

The Mini Note's screen hinge and battery design prevents any connectors from being located at the back of the unit (where I'd like them). Hence, all the connections are on the left and right sides of the machine. I usually plug the notebook mouse into the left USB port and run the cable around the back of the Mini Note to the right side. This keeps the cable out of the way and gives me more room on the right for the mouse. This is OK if I am working off the battery. But when the Mini Note is connected to mains power, the huge power plug that sticks out the right side is quite annoying and can get in the way of the mouse. HP, take note; please redesign the next series to have an "L" shaped connector to keep it out of the way.

Some other reviewers mentioned the lack of battery life. I agree with this, too. Nevertheless, there are configuration tweaks you can apply to help maximise battery life. In the BIOS I turn off the hardware I don't regularly use, such as Bluetooth, LAN, Express card, web cam, etc. If I need them, I just turn them back on.

Now, the screen; I love it. At 1280x768, it is bright and sharp, therefore, usable. Yes, it presents some text and menus in tiny fonts, but at the distances most people would use this machine, the screen is readable. Most web sites fit within the browser view port without horizontal scrolling. I'd prefer this over the offerings from other UMPC manufacturers.
I know I said I wouldn't mention the temperature issues, but, I feel compelled to state that after an hour or so spent writing this review (I was distracted by a phone call) the Mini Note is hardly warmer than the ambient room temperature. Of course, this is just running Word 2007. But, as far as I am concerned, this is the sort of thing the Mini Note is designed for; simple productivity tasks.
Additionally, one reviewer stated that the CPU fan runs flat-out all the time. He obviously missed the setting in the BIOS that lets you turn this "feature" off. Normally, the Mini Note runs very quietly, as is the case with mine right now. Although, I must admit that twice now, when waking from "sleep" mode, the fan in my Mini Note seemed to get stuck on full speed. A reboot fixed this, which implies it is an OS problem, not the hardware.
What would make the Mini Note perfect? OK, a faster CPU would definitely be welcome. Secondly, the 225mm (8.9") screen is fine; however, the lid has a lot of wasted real estate. After moving the speakers, it could accommodate a screen 50mm (2") larger (275mm or 11"). Even at the same resolution, this would make the Mini Note considerably better.
That seems to sum up all my main thoughts on the Mini Note. But suffice to say, after another hour using it, I love it even more. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Great Mobile Desktop Replacement

Bought this unit about a month ago as a replacement for my wife's aging Toshiba 2.8MHz 15" laptop. She was looking for a machine with a full size keyboard and number pad with additional speed, storage, and memory. She owns a retail store and also runs 3 websites so portability is only a factor taking the computer from home to her shop and back. Although a "heavyweight" at 7.7 lbs this unit is still .1 lbs lighter than her old Toshiba. I was very unsure about going to Vista, but after stripping off the uneeded HP extras, this unit has plenty of memory and speed even running Vista to keep my wife (the only person I know who normally bounces between 10 web pages, MS Frontpage, Excel, and possibly Word) working without a degradation in speed. The screen is bright and clear. She often also works at a local coffee house and the battery life seems decent once you adjust the settings to the saver mode. So far all aces...

Customer Review: Watch out for the memory!!!

Windows Vista requires 2GB RAM MINIMUM to run. To run other applications you will need at least 3GB RAM. I had mistakenly gotten a 2GB model and at times it takes 45 seconds just to send soemthing to the recycle bin or else a reboot is required. Painfully SLOW!!!

Also, the tablet doesn't work properly. There is a distinct discrepancy between the location you place the pen and the location the computer recognizes. I gave up on the tablet aspect of my laptop. This laptop also runs really hot. The longer you use, the higher the temperature. The higher the temperature, the slower the laptop. Running it for over three hours without a fan blowing on it is out of the question. The only nice things nice about it are the included games (which you can't uninstall) and the 12.1" size (so light!).

Think I'll upgrade to a Sony. My Sony desktop has been quite reliable for the last 5 years and still running strong. Haha, in fact, it's faster at running graphics applications than the HP, especially after the HP heats up.

Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity for this notebook. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed and boosts the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Blu-ray ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVDยฑRW. It also incorporates a DVDยฑRW writer that can also burn CDs, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard (with integrated numeric keypad) and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics/video card, which provides up to 2303 MB of total graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista (512 MB dedicated RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features.

Customer Review: Great value at discounted price + rebate

At the discounted price of $900 as of mid-June + the $50 rebate, this laptop was a great value, and still is at $1000, though I would recommend waiting a bit for another HP discount to pop up this summer. The design and structure of the laptop and very slick and hip. This laptop was built and is marketed for entertainment, so I would recommend it for any families or students. 4GB of RAM is a nice boost to system performance, and the 250GB (219GB usable disk space after partition + OS) should be plenty for most users, but if not, fast external storage is getting pretty cheap these days. The screen is fantastic and the quad-band (?) is plenty fast. Overall, its a great machine with high performance for most entertainment applications. If you can snatch it for $900 or less, depending upon what rebates/coupons HP throws out there, it's a fantastic value.

HP's high-gloss Imprint finish encases the elegant, curvilinear form and is more durable than traditional painted surfaces.

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive is more than double the average size for notebook PCs, and it offers a fast 5400 RPM disk speed--an improvement over other notebooks with extra-large hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

Screen, Video & Audio
While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14.1-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card, which provides up to 1407 MB of available RAM/video memory (128 MB dedicated video RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), the 8400M lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with this notebook's integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip.

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (as well as a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:
