Customer Review: love this hp

I bought this laptop for my last two years of college (after having this laptop I am suprised I lasted the for first degree without it). The 2GB of RAM is awesome for Vista (friends of mine made the mistake of purchasing laptops with only 1GB of RAM and found that Vista does not run well with only 1GB, Vista really needs the 2GB of RAM to work right). Screen clarity is great. The battery lasts for about three hours if you do not change any settings to extend battery life; the power saving settings are available, but I don't need to use it for more than three hours at a time so I never made the changes. Using the Windows Easy Transfer was easy after I set up a wireless connection (using a Wireless G Broadband Router with my desktop still at the main computer desk), I didn't even have to physically connect the computers in order to transfer my files (this part took awhile, but I had a lot of stuff on my desktop to copy over to the laptop, honestly I am suprised it didn't take longer). I like that you can control the volume with the touch of a finger just above the keyboard (also from here you can stop, play, pause, mute, etc). The CD Burner is a lot faster than my desktop ever was.
Mainly I use this for class. I haven't had any problems with the keyboard or the fingerpad at all. I can sit in the classroom and get feed from my professors that helps with the classes. I haven't had any overheating problems. It seems like no matter what device I buy works with this laptop. I had trouble with that with my desktop. The laptop isn't picky about which usb I insert stuff into (on my desk top it always made me use a certain one first and only for certain things). I've connected my mp3 player to it, removable storage, and a video camera.
What's even nicer is the HP Total Care Advisor. It comes up first thing when you turn the computer on. For people like me who aren't perfectly tech savvy this is nice, because it's basically the "Complete Dummies Guide to What Exactly is Going On With Your Computer." It tells you how strong your internet connection is (with the router it's perfect), security, back ups, printer, updates (the pop-ups I find to be particularly annoying, this is much nicer and it explains whether you really need it or not), pc health, and your battery.
This laptop is versatile. That is one thing that drove me bonkers when shopping for a laptop; several of the laptops in my price range did not function well in "extreme conditions". As it turns out "extreme conditions" was a loose translation of "anywhere that wasn't your desk and the laptop couldn't be moved at all." What is the point of getting something portable if it really isn't? This hp works great and I have yet to use it at my desk. I've used it everywhere else though: while bouncing around to some music when doing homework, scrolling through stuff going up stairs and holding the computer at odd angles, on the top of a scattered pile of books and notes, and my insane list could go on.
The speed is great. I haven't used the DVD burner or the webcam yet. It does way more stuff than I will ever actually need it to do, but it's great that it's there. Mostly I love that it was more affordable and does all the stuff I need it to with out me having to worry if it's going to be tempermental or take forever to do small tasks. It's perfect for people like me who are students on a budget.
P.S. This laptop also has survived my eight year old with flying colors.

Expensive & Non-durable

I hate writing bad reviews for products that i own. Unfortunately i would like to share my experience with this laptop. At first few months it was ok, but after 5 months of hardly using, one time it just stop working and it wont charge. So i sent it to local HP tech and they told me that it a motherboard problem and they need to change it. This time it was still under warranty so i didn't need to pay any bucks. but after 4 months which the warranty of the HP expired again it stopped working and same problem was diagnose and now i have to pay for $500 just to fix and replace the motherboard again. I have 4 different laptop and 2 of them are HP, but this model isn't that good enough to last.

Customer Review: Good value and rock solid now, would buy another

Purchased in December 2007. Loved the bells and whistles of this laptop and the display.
The good news.......

In April HP support released a slew of software updates for this computer including a bios update. MS service pack 1 was also included.

After 6 hours of installing the updates the laptop runs flawless, faster and rock solid and great wireless range. I love it now. Awesome for DVD playback and spread sheets. It is now my primary computer.

Battery life can be improved in Vista setting tweaks to about 3 hours for video playback. Expect about 2 hours on normal usage.
Since then I have increased the operating speed by adding another Gig of memory (about $80.00) and replacing the hard drive with a larger faster 180 gig Sata 7200 rpm drive (about $120.00) and using the original drive in the second drive bay for video's and data. You will need a HP Sata drive caddy to install it (about $35.00). The mouse pad can be sticky due to perspiration.
The original bad news....

Initially had intermittent web-cam and external USB devices along with loss of audio and changing of display settings and freezing of video playback and system lockup. Returning from hibernation or sleep mode would crash the system or programs would crash it. Just about every problem others had stated.

HP support solution was to do a system reload which worked until you added a USB device or 3rd party software.

I worked around the problems by reinstalling drivers and not shutting the computer down defeating the purpose of a laptop.

New Classmate PC Laptop From Intel

At the 2009 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) expo - Las Vegas, Intel introduce an updated version of its Classmate PC reference design that adds several new capabilities. This version of the Classmate PC laptop features with a convertible tablet and touch-screen system and allow Intel and its OEM partners to offer two different types of low-cost laptops for school children.

The latest incarnation of the Intel Classmate PC now gives Intel and its OEM partners a choice of two different laptop designs for school children, in order to improve the learning experience for students, parents, teachers, and schools by new technology.

Like the previous clam shell design (mini laptop the 8.9-inch display), the convertible Classmate is based on the Intel Atom processor, the near-ubiquitous netbook platform. Specifically, the convertible Classmate PC Laptop uses an Atom N270 processor at 1.6GHz and a 945GSE chipset, and Intel claims about 30% longer battery life and 50% higher system performance for the new model.

The new Classmate PC Laptop is traditional laptop mode – adjusts with changing needs in the classroom, the screen swivels 180 degrees for sharing with peers and teachers. The convertible Classmate PC will also support a version of Microsoft Windows XP software that had been specifically designed for this type of laptop.

The new Classmate PC Laptop designed for a low-cost laptop for school children that a local OEM could manufacture and sell. While a laptop based on the Classmate PC design retails from $200 to $500 in the United States, Intel does not offer a specific price for these laptop.

There are two purpose why the Intel company released this model. One is to help school children connect to the Internet and expand their educational opportunities. Second reason is they want to introduce them self and Classmate PC Laptop to potentially millions of new customers in emerging markets.

Others specification of new Classmate PC Laptop 2009 are display 1024x600 color LCD (resolution), Storage comes in the form of a 60GB, 4,200-RPM Samsung hard drive, and the whole system weighs in at just 2.8 lbs. in the default configuration.

Customer Review: Running on AC heats up this adapter

This was the correct adapter, and it works fine. I have noticed though that it gets VERY HOT if you are using the laptop with it plugged in (My original HP adapter is used this way everyday and doesn't do this). It charged the battery fine without heating up when the laptop was off.
