HP NC2400 12.1 Inch Laptop, Intel Core Duo U2500 1.20 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 60 GB Hard Drive

HP NC2400 12.1 Inch Laptop, Intel Core Duo U2500 1.20 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Windows XP Professional
HP Compaq nc2400 Business Notebook PC is compact, lightweight and with all the flexibility you could ever need. Business computing just doesn't get any more mobile than this.

Customer Review: Quite Nice, but a wee bit small

I bought this machine after extensively using a machine that was a 17-inch and weighed nearly 9 pounds. The dimensions and weight of this machine delighted me immediately, and the high resolution for such a small screen justified my purchase.
When I received the machine, I was somewhat dismayed that my hands (though slightly larger than average) were quite nearly too large for this machine, and fell off the edges ever so slightly. This only took a few days to get adjusted to, and for the most part, I am satisfied with both the performance and form factor of the machine. It is nearly textbook small and at 3 pounds, almost laughably light. But laugh only in the spirit of freedom from lugging around giant notebooks.
My only issue with the notebook is that it is too small to use as a desktop replacement on a regular basis. I consult 1-2 days a week off-site with this laptop, and when connecting external displays and mice, the drastic difference in text size between this screen and other screens can be a little disorienting.
Overall, I am pleased with the performance and the size, and only mildly turned off by the very small nature. Someone of my hand size and someone who does much consulting should get at least a 14.1 form factor laptop. This is perfect for the road warrior who spends a lot of time on his/her lap, and this works perfect for me on my couch, but a little larger is needed for long-term, all-day usage.

New Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400

The new Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL series "Lenovo Thinkpad SL400" is the first line of small business notebooks designed with ThinkPad styling at an affordable price, provides good performance, a fresh new design, mobile broadband, and top-notch support. The Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 is the 14.1-inch member of the SL family, It's almost like a cross between a multimedia and a business notebook.

The SL series will initially be introduced in the 14.1-inch SL400 and 15.4-inch SL500 so all the mainstream bases are covered, but there is no large workstation or ultraportable. Both the SL400 and the SL500 start off at $799 , but this depends on the processor, memory, display (1440×900 or 1280×768) and other features you opt for. Like the Notebook Lenovo X300, the Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 has replaced the traditional ThinkPad’s ugly steel hinges with color-coordinated black hinges which are completely hidden when the lid is closed.

The SL400 is running a discrete graphics card, the nVidia GeForce 9300M GS, which eats up more battery resources than integrated graphics do. The SL400 not only produced blazing speeds, it also achieved 4 hours 38 minutes of battery life on MobileMark 2007. The Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 with monitor 14-inch display operates at 1440×900, a respectable widescreen resolution that is big enough for day-to-day use as well as basic multitasking.

The Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 is quite solid in terms of build quality, though the plastics used in the chassis construction do give in to some case flex when squeezed. First and foremost is the top of the display lid, which has been given a high gloss reflective surface. The keyboard on the Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad SL400 has zero flex and excellent key travel with quiet presses. The keyboard is remarkably similar to the keyboards on the older ThinkPad R-series notebooks.

The number of ports the SL400 has is fairly good and certainly much better than the average budget notebook designed for small business. Here's a run down of the ports:
  • 4 USB 2.0 ports
  • Firewire
  • ExpressCard slot
  • Gigabit Ethernet and modem
  • 5-in-1 multi-card reader
  • Audio out, microphone in
  • VGA monitor out
  • HDMI (video and audio)
  • Kensington lock slot

Following the Notebook FSC Amilo Si3655, the Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 is our second test sample to be equipped with Intel's newest PM45 chipset and the much hyped Montevina Platform. Completing the package, the ThinkPad SL400 has a new Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU at 2.26 GHz and 3MB L2 Cache, It's equipped with 256MB GDDR3 of video memory.

Customer Review: Great Mobile Desktop Replacement

Bought this unit about a month ago as a replacement for my wife's aging Toshiba 2.8MHz 15" laptop. She was looking for a machine with a full size keyboard and number pad with additional speed, storage, and memory. She owns a retail store and also runs 3 websites so portability is only a factor taking the computer from home to her shop and back. Although a "heavyweight" at 7.7 lbs this unit is still .1 lbs lighter than her old Toshiba. I was very unsure about going to Vista, but after stripping off the uneeded HP extras, this unit has plenty of memory and speed even running Vista to keep my wife (the only person I know who normally bounces between 10 web pages, MS Frontpage, Excel, and possibly Word) working without a degradation in speed. The screen is bright and clear. She often also works at a local coffee house and the battery life seems decent once you adjust the settings to the saver mode. So far all aces...

    HP 2133 KX868AT#ABA 8.9-Inch Mini-Note Laptop

    HP 2133 KX868AT#ABA 8.9-Inch Mini-Note Laptop (1.2 GHz VIA C7-M Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Vista Basic 32)
Nearly perfect (for its intended purpose)

Firstly, this review is being written on the 1.6Ghz, HP2133 Mini Note with 2Gb RAM and Vista Home Basic (which was installed at the factory). I have also read the myriad comments in the other reviews about poor CPU performance and warm operation. Therefore, I'll avoid similar statements, only to say that I have also noticed these issues under certain circumstances.

Nevertheless, I have turned off most of the useless bells and whistles in Vista and customised the OS to work adequately for the tasks I perform. And what I do isn't necessarily trivial. I have Office 2007 installed and it works fine to write university assignments and work reports, etc. Word, with the screen set to "page width" view is readable and as functional as my desktop. I also installed Adobe CS3. Yes, it can be slow at times, but it performs well enough to get the job done (using InDesign, Photoshop and occasionally, Dreamweaver). However, I understood when I bought the Mini Note, that it was not designed for multimedia production, but more for multimedia presentation and for basic computing. It is NOT a desktop replacement and was never intended to be.
The more I use my 2133, the more I love it. That doesn't mean I haven't noticed some negative issues (other than those highlighted in other reviews). I'll outline these below.
I won't comment on the touchpad, because I rarely use it. Most of the time, I use the Mini Note on a desk or on my briefcase (placed on my lap), so I plug in a laptop mouse. I would do this with ANY laptop or notebook. However, the Mini Note does allow for more space to use a mouse than a conventional laptop. Once I have finished using the Mini Note, it fits in my briefcase with all my other stuff.
Talking of placing the Mini Note in a briefcase; I am astonished that there isn't a case or bag for it. Most laptop bags are too big and would defeat the purpose of buying the Mini Note. As a result, I use a cloth bag I got with a mixer tap (faucet) I bought for a renovation. It is the perfect size to protect against scratches and marks. This is not to say the nice brushed aluminium (aluminum) case is susceptible to scratches; it's not, I just like to protect my equipment.
The Mini Note's screen hinge and battery design prevents any connectors from being located at the back of the unit (where I'd like them). Hence, all the connections are on the left and right sides of the machine. I usually plug the notebook mouse into the left USB port and run the cable around the back of the Mini Note to the right side. This keeps the cable out of the way and gives me more room on the right for the mouse. This is OK if I am working off the battery. But when the Mini Note is connected to mains power, the huge power plug that sticks out the right side is quite annoying and can get in the way of the mouse. HP, take note; please redesign the next series to have an "L" shaped connector to keep it out of the way.
Some other reviewers mentioned the lack of battery life. I agree with this, too. Nevertheless, there are configuration tweaks you can apply to help maximise battery life. In the BIOS I turn off the hardware I don't regularly use, such as Bluetooth, LAN, Express card, web cam, etc. If I need them, I just turn them back on.
Now, the screen; I love it. At 1280x768, it is bright and sharp, therefore, usable. Yes, it presents some text and menus in tiny fonts, but at the distances most people would use this machine, the screen is readable. Most web sites fit within the browser view port without horizontal scrolling. I'd prefer this over the offerings from other UMPC manufacturers.
I know I said I wouldn't mention the temperature issues, but, I feel compelled to state that after an hour or so spent writing this review (I was distracted by a phone call) the Mini Note is hardly warmer than the ambient room temperature. Of course, this is just running Word 2007. But, as far as I am concerned, this is the sort of thing the Mini Note is designed for; simple productivity tasks.
Additionally, one reviewer stated that the CPU fan runs flat-out all the time. He obviously missed the setting in the BIOS that lets you turn this "feature" off. Normally, the Mini Note runs very quietly, as is the case with mine right now. Although, I must admit that twice now, when waking from "sleep" mode, the fan in my Mini Note seemed to get stuck on full speed. A reboot fixed this, which implies it is an OS problem, not the hardware.
What would make the Mini Note perfect? OK, a faster CPU would definitely be welcome. Secondly, the 225mm (8.9") screen is fine; however, the lid has a lot of wasted real estate. After moving the speakers, it could accommodate a screen 50mm (2") larger (275mm or 11"). Even at the same resolution, this would make the Mini Note considerably better.
That seems to sum up all my main thoughts on the Mini Note. But suffice to say, after another hour using it, I love it even more. Highly recommended.

HP Pavilion DV6880SE 15.4" Special Edition Laptop

HP Pavilion DV6880SE 15.4" Special Edition Laptop (1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Blu Ray Drive, Vista Premium)
Designed for fast access to your entire entertainment library, the HP Pavilion dv6880se notebook PC in ceramic white and silver is a great choice for both families and business travelers on the go. The 15.4-inch high-definition BrightView display looks good even in direct sunlight, and you'll enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the Express card slot. This notebook also incorporates a Blu-ray drive that's compatible with the new high-definition DVD disc format. This stylish laptop also features a high-gloss, durable HP Imprint finish with the color shifting Influx pattern, which moves from a piano black exterior with silver interior to a clean ceramic white and silver finish throughout plus a coordinating sliver keyboard.

It's powered by the 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. This notebook also features a 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g), 8x dual-layer DVDยฑRW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS with up to 1535 MB of total allocated video memory, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and HDMI A/V output. It also includes an integrated Webcam in the LCD's bezel and an omnidirectional microphone for easy video chats.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

    The Basics

    • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

      • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
      • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
      • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
      • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

    • Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

    • Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

    • DVD/CD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Blu-ray ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVDยฑRW. It also incorporates a DVDยฑRW writer that can also burn CDs, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.

    • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
    Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which displays an 18 percent larger picture than standard 15-inch screens and an improved contrast ratio. It has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card, which provides up to 1535 MB of available RAM/video memory (256 MB dedicated video RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), the 8400M lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

    Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g), with throughput up to 54 Mbps at 5 GHz (802.11a) and 2.4 GHz (802.11g). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

    • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
    • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
    • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
    • Analog video out: 1 VGA monitor port and 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV or projector
    • 1 ExpressCard 54/34

Customer Review: VERY VERY decent laptop

I purchased this product as a desktop replacement. I've had it for a few weeks now and it is great. It actually came with more than I expected. Great wide screen, mic, webcam, quick-key buttons for quick play, mouse pad disable option, all of the jacks and ports you need, quick on/off switch for wireless network card, decent speakers, dedicated cards, and more.

The only things that have been poor thus far is that my disk player would open itself randomly (it has been a little while since it last did that), and when installed Windows Live Messenger it began to restart itself as windows kept saying it was in a critical state every time it booted up. Thank heavens for safe mode and restart points! A bit of bloatware but there is no problem with uninstalling.
Overall, I highly recommend this well-rounded laptop to everyone in search of something perfect for the price.
