Apple MacBook MB403LL/A 13.3" Laptop

Apple MacBook MB403LL/A 13.3" Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive)

MacBook is Great
I purchased the MacBook for my first laptop computer, and my first Mac. It is great, easy to use, still trying to figure out all the tricks of the trade, but it is so much cleaner than a "pc" as the commercial calls them. I would definitely recommend this computer to anyone who is worried about not being able to use a Mac, it is really easy. The delivery was right on time, and the only thing I'm waiting on is the mail in rebate, because it is still processing. No complaints from this guy!!!

awsome
This is my first macbook and first apple product i dont even own a ipod, and i have to say that it is with out a doubt the best computer i have ever owned. very easy to fidgure out the mac osx. about the only gripe i have with it is all the updates i had to download on a new computer. Other then that it is perfect. I am in Iraq and the video messages i can send to friends and family are a nice way to stay in touch.

I do not rate 5 stars 'cause the price
I'm very satisfied with the SZ670. During the last 3 years I've been working with a Sony Vaio FX series and never had problems with that. The "problem" with Vaio's, as previous commented, is the quantity of foolish softwares pre-installed. I rated it with 4 stars 'cause:

1st) Pre-installed foolish softwares will take only 30 minutes from you to snatch that out being a reversible problem.
2nd) The battery impressed me taking 3 to 4 hours to finish off depending on the application and brightess configuration).
3rd) In comparison with my FX I noticed 40% less weight.
4th) The Video Card is not a GeForce 8500 GT 512 Mbps, but to deal with 13.3' laptops is the better one that I've been reaching.
5th) The Xbrite LCD screen is outstanding for business purposes and even for videos, movies and so on. I noticed an improvement regarding the reflection in comparison with the FX as well. It was normal the LCD reflects the lights behind it disturbing my vision, and now this problem was reduced and almost fixed.
6th) The T7700 processor responds well to Windows Vista with no lags.
7th) Some advice: use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. I've experienced some troubles with IE 7.0 running on Vista like freezes and suddenly ends since I installed Vista.
8th) I did not try the downgrade for XP.

Excellent Notebook
This notebook is very portable. Very convenient as compared to the 17" (bulky & heavy - good desktop replacement) & the 15". It is fast, runs multiple applications, quick start-up time. The Toshiba resolution on the screen makes it one of the best around. I have compared other brands, but they just don't seem to make it. Based on specs & cost, great buy. This is my 5th Toshiba notebook....I will stick with the brand.

Great dimension, performance and light weight !
I've always like Toshiba laptops, since I have one model with this battery problem so I changed to hp pavillion series which is not a bad laptop either but it had this upper panel so sensitive that run DVD player program every time I accidentally pass my hand over it and it was a little anoying. Any way I recentlly had this Toshiba, that has been perfect for my work. Big hard drive, probably I will increase its memory up to 3gb for even better performance, excellent 13inches screen size, very light o carry. Haven't had any problem with Vista.

The only thing that I don't like is the quality of sound, but that's not a priority for me and if it were I would plug a pair of speaker. And that it gets a little warm on the left side beside the touch pad.

By the way the volume control is analog which gives you more control of the volume.

HP Pavilion DV9730US 17inch Entertainment Laptop

HP Pavilion DV9730US 17.0" Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-64 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Radiance

Nice Laptop, not great, just nice.
Received my DV9750US yesterday. It's got some good features, big bright screen, even when running on battery power. If you know how to set the power settings in Vista. It came with 3GB memory, I wanted 4GB. Stick with the 3GB unless you are running a 64 bit OS. Laptop seems to be plenty fast enough, but I have not installed my Apps yet. Boots up fast and shuts down fast.

Only three stars for the following reasons:

HP's Quickplay does not display in full screen, or at least I have not found the control yet.

Mine came with a Blue-Ray drive, waste of money because it would not play on my HD LCD TV via the built in HDMI port.
Why have a HDMI output and HD DVD player if you can't watch a movie in full screen mode (Blue-Ray only plays with HP's Quickplay software) I would have gotten the model with a HD drive and 2.2 GHZ DC had I known that.

Next is the keyboard, the 'Shift' Key seem too small, or the 'Enter' Key is too big. Takes getting used to.

This model also came with two 250GB hard drives, one for the OS and one for Data. I have not seen any RAID options which would have been nice to have.

I would give the DV9750US 4 or 4 1/2 stars, but the Blue-Ray limitations or QuickPlay limitation just pissed me off. Other than that and no RAID, this may prove to be the best laptop I've had. I'll still buy another one, without the Blue-Ray drive.

Good but not Great.

Toshiba Satellite A215-S5802 15.4 inch Laptop

Toshiba Satellite A215-S5802 15.4" Laptop (AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core TK-57 Processor, 1024 MB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Onyx Blue

great overall BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE SPEAKERS!!!
this is my latest toshiba laptop and my third one, after the first i got a NEC before my previous Toshiba. Im not going to talk much about the processor and screen or keyboard or speed or whatever, it's great overall, well, of course, if you use windows system instead of vista, i never use vista anyway so im speaking only for windows on this new baby.

one unbelievable flaw needs to be watched out!!!

me buddy got one similar model, not sure if it's M215, but also come with a round shaped Harman Kardon speaker pair, the 'incredible' thing with this supposed to be superb speaker is its soft volume!!!! i mean, my previous M50 has thinner rectangular speakers on the top panel, and it's loud and powerful, but this M215 and my friend's has this terribly mushy and low volume, why is that? i once thought it's because of the EU volume limit law that says about any device with an earphone plug, but i bought mine in Beijing, so apparently it's not that. plus, other brands and models on the shelf don't have this problem, even if they don't have HARMAN KARDON.
can anybody explain this?

"Freakin' Sweet" bios Flash solves "black Screen of death".
IMPORTANT: Toshiba has very recently released a fix for the "Black Screen of Death"; Toshiba released a BIOS flash using Toshiba's safg v1.70 or v1.90, depending on your model number, which seems to fix the problem... It was a long time in the coming, but better late then never.

This computer is an adequate performer, that had been hampered with the problem of the screen intermittantly going blank, leaving you high and dry if your work had not been recently saved. In the computer lore this problem was known as the "black screen of death", which affected most of Toshiba's Satellite A215-xxxxx laptops. This was a very frustrating problem that drove many consumers to violent daydreams, but it seems Toshiba has finally released a fix.

For the price, this computer is an excellent performer, able to run Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, and Half-Life 2(excluding episodes 1&2) at a playable level on low settings. A RAM upgrade is highly recommended (get kingston or corsair: $50-$60 for a 2 GB sodimm) and everything seems to run just fine.

It could be better
I bought this laptop as a tool to access the internet, play DVD movies, and do basic (non-gaming) functions such as word processing, spreadsheets, maintain school information.

I searched other brands (Dell, HP/Compaq, Sony, Gateway, and several others) for price, perceived quality based on reviews, speed, HD space, etc - all the typical features. Overall, for what I needed a laptop to do, the Toshiba seems to fit.

This Toshiba (sold by Amazon) beat the others only because everyone else was charging shipping and California sales tax. Otherwise, I would have purchased an HP model. I had even checked Costco (my preferred retailer), but the costs were much higher compared to Amazon.

This computer came with 1 GB SDRAM and Windows Vista Home Premium. Everything is perfect for what we need this laptop to do. This computer is NOT being used for gaming or any sort of complicated programming. So, the 1 GB of SDRAM is fine, even with Windows Vista Home Premium. And the sound design is somewhat better than expected - using a variable wheel rather than a push button.

The negatives are relatively minor. The power cord is plugged into the laptop on the same side as the DVD drive. Second, I'd rather have XP than Vista. Vista seems like a slightly glorified XP. A few button changes and you get Vista. I did have difficulty loading a simple medical dictionary onto it. Last, the location of the WLAN button isn't obvious. Toshiba uses a black slider switch located on the black base.

Customer Reviews

Worst laptop ever
My laptop has had numerous problems and I have wasted hours with useless tech support.

First, it was unable to burn the recovery disk. Of course it can't just come with one. Tech support answered my request for a recovery disk only 1 month after I made it.

Then the SPDIF port doesn't work. 4 hours with tech support, they had me install some 3rd party trial DVD software since according them HP tech support, "the HP software isn't very good." Finally we all gave up. Great entertainment PC with no digital audio.

It had always crashed with blue screens. The time it would run keep decreasing until it would only run 1 to 15 minutes without crashing. Tech support had me use the recovery disk, which wiped out the hard drive and failed to install anything. So 2 weeks later I got another recovery disk, with the same result. Another couple of weeks and I got a new hard disk (that was put together with misaligned stripped screws.) Over the course of 2 months I got it "serviced", where it was returned without even reinstalling the OS. Now that I've reinstalled the OS, it crashes constantly with blue screens.

I've been dealing with the HP "quality" managers for another month, and there going to send me a box to return it. Over a month to send me box? I'm assigned a manager who is always busy or unavailable. It seems their intention is to drag this out until the warranty expires.

I will certainly never purchase an HP product again.

Just Amazing
This HP Laptop has everything a person desires for a "good start". This is my first laptop computer and I think it will be my partner for the next 5 years at least. I'm surprised with its design, high performance and diversity of tools and resources. That's it, folks!

nice machine
this is a great machine with some annoying flaws
-quickplay lights are too sensitive and are always on - you cannot turn them off, i am prone to slighty grazing them by accident at least 5 times a day and sometimes they just activate on their own. VERY annoying!
-sometimes the trackpad doesn't work
-i have noticed that it is very slow using Office 2007

otherwise it has a nice screen, not too heavy, and has an OK battery life
